The Trust On…
Professor Julia Boffey (1953–2026)

The Trustees and Officers of the Yorkist History Trust were deeply saddened to learn of the death on 11 September 2026 of Professor Julia Boffey, Professor Emerita of Medieval Studies at Queen Mary, University of London. Alongside her numerous other academic roles, Julia was appointed a Trustee of the YHT in 2000 and served as a Managing Trustee from 2022 until she stepped down from both positions in 2025 on account of ill health. Julia was a dedicated Trustee and was integral to the workings of the Trust. She oversaw the progress of Trust publications and acted as a reviewer of manuscripts, and contributed to the 2025 volume Loyalty Binds Me: Yorkist Studies for Peter and Carolyn Hammond with an excellent and incisive essay entitled ‘The Yorkist Cause in Middle English Verse: Short Poems and Manuscript Contexts’. During her illness, Julia remained interested to hear about how the Trust’s work was progressing, and was very pleased to see the publication of The Post-Mortem Accounts and Inventories of Sir Thomas Charlton (d.1465), edited by Claire Martin, earlier this year. Above all else, her kind and encouraging presence – not to mention her clear-sighted ability to find practical solutions – will be deeply missed by all at the Yorkist History Trust.
